How and Why

Riding on the back of a quad bike in front of this group of hounds allowed me to keep pace with them as they ran along the road to exercise in a nearby field. From my vantage point on the quad I was able to hold the camera at the eye level of the hounds. For this image I used a little fill flash to balance the exposure and allow me a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the motion, while still using an aperture small enough to give sufficient depth of field to render the hounds in sharp focus from front to back. The fill flash has also given a pleasant catch-light in the hounds' eyes.

All the hounds had very different personalities and this picture shows some of the aspects of their different characters.

The hounds legs stretching down are balanced by the tails reaching up and overall I'm pleased with the composition of the image.

Background

A group of hounds in the Scottish Borders - no longer used for hunting, receiving their morning exercise run.
