How and Why

This was taken in the early morning light in Dubrovnik's old town. The low light was beautiful but made avoiding flare a concern. My lens was constantly getting covered in the spray drift from the pressure washer and I kept a cleaning cloth in one hand to wipe water droplets while I was shooting.

I observed this scene developing for a while, seated outside a cafe in the square outside the Church - when I saw the opportunity I got up and began to explore my way around the scene. I exposed several rolls, investigating the potential. It wasn't until I'd been photographing for a while that the Sister came out to inspect progress (choosing her position carefully to avoid getting sprayed).

I really like the narrative of this photograph, it's very simple but effective and the contrast really suits a black and white image.

Background

An unconventional, but truly effective way of cleaning the rugs of this Church in the old city of Dubrovnik. Great plumes of spray were drifting through the air and I really like the posture of the Sister in the background leaning out of the way to avoid a soaking.
