How and Why

Before I went out to this event this was exactly the sort of photograph that I was aiming to get - lots of steam drifting about to create an atmospheric image. As things worked out there was very little opportunity for this type of picture - the heat of the summer's day seemed to result in the steam not hanging around for long. This scene lasted only a few seconds, then the steam had drifted away - I managed to get a few frames of which this was the only one that was acceptably sharp (in my haste I struggled to find focus accurately).

There was great sculpting light that really shows the form of the engine well. In the hurry to take this picture I didn't have time to make any exposure compensation, fortunately the negative is well balanced and has scanned well.

The driver on the steam engine lighting a cigarette gives a nice characterisation to what would otherwise be a bit of a cliched subject.

Background

This photograph was taken at an open day where steam enthusiasts demonstrate their beautifully restored and maintained machines.
