How and Why

While taking photographs of this scene I was really struggling to exclude a lot of distracting background elements - this was the only viewpoint that allowed me to exclude all background distractions. The composition has worked quite well, although with this sort of photograph I really miss the wide angle of view that 17mm used to provide with 35mm film. I had to get really low (laying down) to get this angle. The highly graphic nature of the image really appeals to me. The composition dictated itself from this viewpoint forming a strong triangle between the man, along the body of the engine, up to the top of the chimney and then along the smoke back to the man.

Flare has been controlled really well thanks to the great optics of the 17-35 mm lens.

Background

This photograph was taken at an open day where steam enthusiasts demonstrate their beautifully restored and maintained machines. This was the same day that I made this and this photograph.
