How and Why

I spent the day taking photographs of the snail racing - after the first hour and a half I reviewed my pictures and noticed that the perspective of the pictures I'd taken was very similar largely due to the confines of the ring around the snails. I ducked under the boundary rope and took up a viewpoint low and close to the centre of the action, due to the length of time setting up each race I had a couple of minutes to get a good shot.

I like this image with the dynamic line to the snails formed by the official's arm. I also like the background interest with the group on the left looking into their bucket of snails and the girl on the right holding her snail in the palm of her hand.

I chose f8 to try and maintain some detail in the background - this allowed me a 1/160th to freeze the movement (of the official not the snails).
