How and Why

This image is on a similar theme to this picture and was quite a challenge to capture due to the fast moving souvenir sellers and very busy viewpoint.

I wanted to simplify the scene and was attracted to the graphic, abstract potential that could be created between the miniatures and the reflection of the Eiffel Tower. For this image to work it was essential to include enough of the tower's reflection for it to be recognisable and by including the base of the tower in the reflection the form of the tower is clear. In trying to include this much of the reflection however, I had to wait for a large enough area of the wet tiles to become free of people which seemed to take an age - added to the fact that the souvenir sellers were constantly on the move plying their trade made this a difficult image to draw together. Several times when I saw the image I was aiming for in front of me or thorough the finder the scene would change before I had a chance to make the exposure - fortunately I did manage to get this one composition that worked.

I like the fact that although the actual Eiffel Tower doesn't appear in the frame the other elements in the picture convey precisely the situation regardless of its absence.
