How and Why

I found the strong contrast in this image compelling; I framed to include as many of the marble steps as possible and positioned the figure on the right-hand third of the composition, allowing space for the power washer to spray into.

These steps are very busy and I had to take the opportunity of this fleeting moment when they were clear of people to get the uncomplicated composition that I was after. By acting on impulse and shooting as soon as I saw the potential of the scene I neglected to adjust my exposure for the bright tone of the marble and underexposed by around a stop. Thanks to shooting in RAW I was able to easily correct for the underexposure in post production. Under the circumstances taking the opportunity to photograph the steps free from other figures was more important than critical exposure given the flexibility provided with the RAW format.

Background

Cleaning marble steps leading up to the Grande Arche in the office district of La Défense, Paris.
